A Celebration of Life funeral service for Dorothy Nell Hunter age 84 of Lamesa, TX will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at the Second Baptist Church of Lamesa with Supt. Rufus Hunter officiating. Interment will follow to the Dawson County Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Gonzales Funeral Home.
Visitation and will be held on Sunday, December 11, 2022 from 12:00 (noon)p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Monday, December 12, 2022, a Wake Service from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Prayer House Church of GOD in Christ at 510 N. 10th Street, Lamesa, TX.,
Dorothy Nell Hunter departed this life on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 in Lubbock, TX.
Dorothy Nell Hunter was born in Marshall, Texas on October 27, 1938. She was the second of six children to the parentage of Miranda (Fuller) and Austin Butler. Her father moved the family to Lamesa, Texas when she was a young child. She attended Blackshear School for several years and received her GED from Lamesa ISD. She married Edward J. Hunter.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers (OZ and Willie Butler), one sister (Ruby Butler), two children (Chauncey Hunter and LaSandra Hunter-Spader), one daughter-in-law (Angela Hunter), one grandson (Dominique Adams), and two great grandsons (Alston and Daveonn Jr. Thomas).
Dorothy loved GOD, FAMILY and PEOPLE. At a young age, she dedicated her life to God. Throughout her journey in life, she served as a wonderful servant and lead by example through her faith, love, kindness, and selflessness. Dorothy worked tirelessly in her church until her health no longer allowed. The better part of her life, she worked as a domestic worker the better part of her life to include, working for Mrs. Evelyn’s Catering, The Puckett’s, and Lamesa ISD. In 1993, after her retirement from Lamesa ISD, she pursued her dream of owning a restaurant. Dorothy purchased Green Hut Café, where she was known for her homestyle cooking and family love. She catered weekly luncheons for Kiwanis, Lion’s, and Rotary Clubs, as well as many family reunions, church and school events. Dorothy had such a beautiful spirit, and it was demonstrated in so many ways to include fostering three brothers and opened her home to those in need. She accepted everyone and never knew a stranger and people knew that her doors were always open especially around the holidays were those who were in need could stop by and eat as well.
The memory of this Phenomenal Proverbs 31 woman will be honored and cherished always by her children; Sons: Charles Hunter of Aurora, CO, Delwayne (Mary) Hunter of Lamesa, TX, Larry Hunter of DeSoto, TX, Rufus (Gwen) Hunter of Lubbock, TX, and Tommy Hunter of Lamesa, TX. Daughters: Debra (Louis) Castle of Red Oak, TX, Yolanda (Mervin) Brown, Linda Phillips, Lolena (Adgiran) Hunter, and Latona “Candy” Hunter all of Lamesa, TX. She also leaves two sisters: Carolyn and Calanthia Butler of Fort Worth, TX. Thirty-two grandchildren, forty-eight great-grandchildren, five aunts, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
