Cora Ivory Brown's Obituary
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Cora Brown, age 64 of Lamesa, Texas are set for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at First Baptist Church in Lamesa, Texas. Interment will follow to Lamesa Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Gonzales Funeral Home of Lamesa, Texas.
Viewing will be on Thursday and Friday, with a Wake on Friday from 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gonzales Funeral Home Chapel.
Cora went to be with her Lord in the early morning of Sunday, December 14, 2014 while at Conenant Lakeside Hospital in Lubbock, Texas.
She was born on May 14, 1950 in Plainview, Texas. Cora married Charlie Brown on July 10, 1975 in Lamesa.
Preceding Cora in death was her son, Geoffrey Lynn Brown; her parents, Henry and Willie Mae Ivory; three brothers, Wesley Joe Ivory, Henry Willie Ivory, John Wayne Ivory.
Cora was a graduate of Wayland Baptist University as well as a graduate of TCLEOSE/Law Enforcement. Cora was the first woman police officer in Plainview, Texas and Lamesa, Texas. She earned her Master's Peace Officer's license. Cora's professional career included, Plainview Police Department-officer from October 1, 1974 to August 1, 1975, Lamesa Police Department-Patrol officer from August 1, 1975 to January 1, 1986, The 106th Judicial District with the District Attorney's office as criminal investigator from January 1, 1986 to December 31, 1996, Director and manager of the Dawson County Senior Citizen's Center from 1997 to December 14, 2014. Cora served on the Board of the Lamesa Independent School District and had the honor to serve as President of the Board during her time of public service to her community. Cora Brown was an ordained Minister and was the Pastor of her beloved church of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Lamesa, Texas. History will record many other achievements of success.
Cora is survived by her most loving family, her husband, Charlie Brown of Lamesa, Texas; her daughters, Ebony Benton and husband, Al Benton of Pecos, Texas and Pamela McDonald of Arlington, Texas; her son, Joe Williams of Altanta, GA; her grand-daughter, Elizabeth Newson of Lamesa, Texas; her sisters, Ella Oliver of Fort Worth, Texas, Nellie Polley and husband, Oliver Roberts of Casa Grande, AZ, Kathryn Davis and husband, Charles Davis of Quinlan, Texas, Herietta Scoggins and husband, Finis Scoggins of Quitaque, Texas, Dixie Carol Clark and husband, Jerry Clark of Olympia, WA; her brothers, Joshua Ivory of Minneapolis, MN, Billy Ivory and wife, Linda Ivory of Fort Worth, Texas, Phineas L. Ivory and wife, Marguerite Ivory of Amarillo, Texas, Clarence E. Ivory of Amarrillo, Texas; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a host of family members and friends.
